Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom is developing a humane seaside sanctuary designed to provide lifelong care for non-releasable dolphins in a natural, protected marine environment. Our model prioritizes animal welfare, environmental integrity, and science-based care, ensuring dolphins have space, autonomy, and conditions that closely resemble their natural habitat.
Current Status
The United States currently has no seaside dolphin sanctuary. OCWOF is working to change that.
OCWOF is in the planning and research phase, focusing on feasibility studies, environmental assessment, regulatory pathways, and long-term sustainability.
What Is a Seaside Sanctuary?
A seaside dolphin sanctuary is a large, natural ocean enclosure where dolphins who cannot be released back into the wild can live in a protected, ocean-based environment. Unlike traditional marine parks, sanctuaries do not use dolphins for entertainment. Instead, they focus on providing space, autonomy, and long-term care while supporting research, education, and conservation.
Why This Matters
Many dolphins in captivity cannot be released due to age, health conditions, or lack of survival skills in the wild. A seaside sanctuary offers a humane alternative—one that prioritizes welfare over entertainment. By creating a natural, ocean-based environment, sanctuaries provide these dolphins with a chance to live more natural lives while also advancing scientific understanding and public awareness of marine conservation.
Our Vision for the Future
Ocean Conservation Waves of Freedom is working to establish a seaside sanctuary in the United States that reflects the highest standards of marine mammal care, environmental responsibility, and scientific integrity. Our goal is to create a space where rescued and non-releasable dolphins can live with dignity, while contributing to research, education, and long-term conservation solutions.
